Fertility Tests For Women

Infertility in women is defined as the inability to become pregnant through unprotected intercourse. A woman is considered infertile if she cannot conceive even after one year of trying. When a woman experiences recurrent miscarriages, this condition is also called infertility. There are several factors that can cause infertility in women, such as age, hormonal issues, lifestyle, or physical problems. The causes of infertility are one-third due to female factors, one-third due to a male problem, and another one-third from a combination of both female and male factors.

Why are fertility tests done?

Fertility tests for women are conducted to identify the reasons behind the inability to achieve pregnancy after engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse for 12 months or more. There are several reasons that can cause infertility in women, and these tests are intended to diagnose the underlying cause. Identifying the issues can help doctors provide the right treatment for female infertility, increasing the chances of conception. Some of the reasons for infertility in women include problems with ovulation, the uterus, fallopian tubes, egg number, and quality. Other factors that increase women’s infertility risk are age, genetic traits, obesity, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, cysts, polycystic ovary syndrome, autoimmune diseases, and tumours.

Who should consider female fertility testing?

A woman should consider fertility testing in the following cases:

  1. If the woman has been actively trying to get pregnant by engaging in unprotected intercourse with her partner.
  2. If the woman’s age is 35 or older, she should consider fertility testing after six months of trying to conceive.
  3. Diagnosed issues with the fallopian tubes, ovaries, or uterus.
  4. Heavy, irregular (more than 35 days between periods), or absent menstruation.
  5. Keeps having miscarriages.
  6. History of pelvic inflammatory disease, pelvic pain, or endometriosis.

Types of infertility tests for women

Best infertility doctors in Kerala discuss your medical history, blood tests, pelvic examination, and minimally invasive procedures to diagnose the cause of infertility. The following are types of infertility tests for women:

Basic Fertility Assessment: The first step in fertility assessment involves learning the medical history of you and your partner. This includes age, weight, menstrual history, medicines if you are currently taking any, and any past pregnancies.

Ovarian Reserve Testing: This test is performed to determine the number of follicles in the ovaries. Women are born with a specific number of eggs, referred to as the ovarian reserve, which decreases as they age. As you grow older, the quality of eggs also goes down, reducing the likelihood of getting pregnant. Several tests can be conducted to assess ovarian reserve, including Antimüllerian Hormone (AMH), Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH), Antral Follicle Count, and Estradiol.

Hormonal Evaluation: You may need a blood test to measure hormones such as progesterone, estrogen, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), and prolactin.

Ovulation Assessment: During the ovulation cycle, the doctor measures the follicular growth, endometrial thickness, and uterine arterial blood with the help of a transvaginal ultrasound.

Hysterosalpingography (HSG): This X-ray test is conducted to check if there’s any blockage in the fallopian tube. A contrast material or dye is injected into the uterus via a thin tube through the vagina and cervix. If the fallopian tubes are not blocked, the dye will fill the tubes and then spill into the pelvic cavity.

Laparoscopy: Through a laparoscopy, the doctor can see and evaluate the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus that constitute the reproductive system. It helps the doctor diagnose conditions such as endometriosis, blocked fallopian tubes, fibroids, and other abnormalities that affect fertility.

Genetic Testing: Genetic testing is performed to check whether there’s a genetic defect that affects female fertility.

Infectious Disease Testing: Doctors might screen a patient for blood type and Rh factor, HIV 1 and 2, Chlamydia and gonorrhoea, Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HbSAg), Hepatitis B Core Antibody (HepB CoreAb), Hepatitis C Antibody (HCV antibody), and VDRL.

Fertility Counselling: Fertility counselling sessions are given to women to cope with the struggles of infertility. Women who suffer from anxiety and depression due to infertility are given counselling and support to help them face challenges.
